Stow City — At its Oct. 13 meeting the Stow City Urban Forestry Commission reported setbacks securing a holiday tree donation for Akron Children's Hospital and agreed to continue outreach to local sellers and suppliers.
Laura, commission member, said the commission applied to an unnamed retailer and to Pine Tree Barn for a donated or discounted pre-lit tree but had not received a final confirmation. "I did apply... I put in the value of a 6 foot tree. And so I but I've heard nothing back," she said. The vendor at Pine Tree Barn initially indicated reduced pricing but did not complete the follow-up.
Commissioners discussed alternate sources, including Sun Cross (which previously provided a gift card), Walmart and other local retailers. Jeff, urban forestry staff, said he could contact a past vendor and check store-level contacts to attempt a rapid purchase if donation offers fail. The commission set a practical deadline tied to its next meeting: the group needs a tree by the Dec. 7 delivery date referenced in the discussion.
Separately, commissioners reviewed logistics for a school-related tree-decorating activity and the supply of small wooden "tree cookies" for students. Jeff and others confirmed there are sufficient ornament supplies and twine for the activity.
The commission did not adopt a final procurement method at the meeting and will continue vendor outreach; staff volunteered to search past emails for retailer contacts and to reach out to a store contact the next day.
