The Stow City Arts Commission spent part of its meeting reviewing outreach efforts after commissioners reported low return rates for a community mural kit distributed to children.
Commissioners said about a dozen completed mural pieces had been returned since the last meeting while roughly 300 kits had been distributed at earlier events. Given the low returns and lack of a designated installation site, the commission voted to table the community mural for redesign and recommended tying it to the Sabertooth master-plan process so the firm can incorporate prior efforts into broader public-art planning.
Commissioners also reported on Warm Up America kits and similar outreach programs. Brooke, staff member, said the commission had distributed about 200 kits recently and that returns are accumulating at the city drop box; more packing sessions and restocking at the senior center and bookmobile were planned. The group discussed clearer labeling—stickers or cards—to help the public identify the program and a QR-code option for digital follow-up. One commissioner suggested placing drop boxes or suggestion boxes at playgrounds and pop-up events to increase returns.
Library staff member Lydia summarized arts-related programming at the library, listing events such as children’s crafts, a "Zombie Barbie" program for kids under 11, teen haunted-gingerbread houses, speed-cubing contests, author visits, and a blues performance by Dante Alessandro. The commission also noted the farmers market’s seasonal closing and asked for volunteers for a Christmas market on Nov. 1.
Commissioners discussed onsite outreach methods (pop-up tables, branded canopies and swag such as small notebooks or colored pencils) and digital methods (QR codes) to improve program visibility. No formal policy changes or new funding decisions were made at the meeting; the commission will plan further outreach and coordinate with Sabertooth on how to fold community mural ideas into the master plan.
