Planning commission denies liquor-store special exception at Gordon Highway and Milledgeville Road

Amanda Cruz presented staff findings that the site is commercial in character but did not meet every section of the ordinance that contemplates liquor stores; plumbing and utilities staff noted there is water on Milledgeville Road but no sewer on the parcel and engineering required site-plan approval and an angled entrance close to 90 degrees from Milledgeville Road. Several residents, including Patricia Jeter and Wombley, opposed the request, saying the area is already saturated with liquor stores and that the intersection adjoins residential developments and apartment complexes.
Applicant Maninder Singh said he intended the store as a neighborhood business addition and denied the characterization that the project would be subsidized housing or Section 8. After public comment, a motion to deny carried. The chair then conducted a roll-call vote on the motion to deny: Commissioner O'Neil — deny; Commissioner Davis — deny; Commissioner McKnight — deny; Commissioner Liersey — deny; Commissioner Malice — deny; Commissioner Cooks — deny; Commissioner Spencer — deny; Commissioner Owens — approve; Commissioner Clark — deny. The special-exception denial will be forwarded to the Oct. 21 full commission as the commission’s recommendation.
