County administrator: Hamilton Red Bridge to be replaced with truss bridge able to carry emergency equipment; trustee memorial planned

County administration reported on Oct. 6 that a memorandum of agreement regarding replacement of the Hamilton Red Bridge is in process and that the county expects the bridge to be replaced with a truss bridge capable of carrying emergency equipment.
The county administrator said he spoke with Scott Thornton, who estimated the schedule as “late spring, early summer” for replacement. Staff said the replacement structure will be an un‑rated truss bridge, which county officials described as a bridge without posted weight limitations so emergency and farm equipment can cross.
County staff said the Virginia Department of Transportation (or the relevant agency) has agreed, if the county accepts, to give the county a piece of the old bridge for display and to allow interpretive signage to memorialize the original structure. The plan was discussed with local stakeholders, including Historic Green Springs and nearby residents.
The county administrator also noted other items in his report: Dominion Energy has provided information about a transmission grid project to add monitoring and efficiency improvements, and Locust Creek Fire Department has discussed a possible CIP expansion and a memorandum of understanding if the county places SAFER‑funded staff there. County staff said they will return with more details on these items.
