Board unanimously approves SAFER and AFG pass‑through appropriations, updates sign ordinance effective date and appoints jail authority representative

According to staff, the SAFER grant will cover 75% of staff costs for the first two years and 35% of staff costs in the final year of the grant. • Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) for equipment: The board authorized a pass‑through appropriation for an Assistance to Firefighters Grant to purchase equipment including replacement hose, turnout gear extractors, rapid intervention packs, and vehicle exhaust filters. Staff said the grant will cover 90% of the equipment costs with a 10% local match. Outcome: approved unanimously.
• Sign ordinance effective date and reconsideration: The board reconsidered a previously adopted sign ordinance to set an effective date of Aug. 15, 2025, to resolve an ongoing sign application for a church that was paused during the ordinance update. Board members said the change would avoid penalizing applicants who paused applications at staff request. The motion to reconsider and set the effective date passed unanimously.
• Appointment to Central Virginia Regional Jail Authority: The board appointed Michael Choate as the county’s citizen representative to the Central Virginia Regional Jail Authority. Outcome: approved unanimously.
Votes were recorded by voice and taken as unanimous “aye” votes. The board generally used standard roll‑call procedures earlier in the meeting and the clerk noted a 7‑0 prevailing vote on prior items, establishing seven voting members present for these actions.
