Committee members discussed opportunities to work with the Friends of the Park (Friends of Port Washington Park and Rec), volunteer groups and local schools to support park projects and fundraising.
John, parks and recreation staff, reported Wendy Brahm of the Friends group could not attend the meeting but that the nonprofit is shifting its focus from running beer gardens toward supporting parks through volunteers and fundraising. John said the Friends group currently houses donations and helped with war memorial fundraising; he cited Mike Keller’s fundraising role for the memorial and said the nonprofit’s 501(c)(3) status allows it to accept donations for capital projects.
John described a new 16‑by‑14 pavilion being installed at the community garden so members have an on‑site meeting place; he said funds for the pavilion were set aside before his tenure and that volunteers such as Scott Gregorash helped organize the garden.
The committee also confirmed two memorial trees will be planted at Possibility Playground this fall; John advised residents with questions to contact him directly for details. Members discussed outreach to scout troops, key clubs and other volunteer organizations to staff Adopt‑a‑Park or clean‑up tasks, and noted existing efforts such as Boy Scout‑installed fishing‑line disposal tubes along Cold Dock Park to reduce hazards.
The committee encouraged continued coordination with the Friends group and requested Wendy Brahm be invited to a future meeting to discuss shared priorities.
