Port Washington reports completed Windrush court, new playgrounds and war memorial repairs; grand opening set for Nov. 8

Port Washington parks staff said several capital projects are complete or near completion, and a dedication for the city’s refurbished war memorial is scheduled for Nov. 8.

John, parks and recreation staff, told the committee the Windrush basketball court project is finished and included a new asphalt approach, improved drainage where winter icing was a hazard, and a grass restoration treatment using a product (mezzio‑trione) applied with grass seed to improve establishment. He said the work was completed in‑house in coordination with the street department and residents have given positive feedback.

Staff reported several playground projects: Whitefish Playground is complete with decorative curbing to retain wood chips; Birchwood Hills now has a new observation platform built with a woodworking frame contributed by Thomas Jefferson Middle School’s woodshop class and finalized by city staff; and a floating pier installed at a nearby pond that John estimated to be about 10 feet wide.

John showed drone imagery of an outfield restoration and noted the removal of two dilapidated sheds near the tennis courts; the city plans to work with middle‑school students on an additional storage project tied to that site.

The committee received a detailed update on the war memorial at Cold Dock Park. John said crews removed and relaid stained and settled bricks, replaced heavily stained bricks with newly re‑engraved pieces from the original brick company, installed new site drainage and are replacing in‑ground electrical fixtures. City electricians (John Phil and Jason Prom) are scheduled to install new lighting; the department expects work to be complete in the coming days and a grand opening program — including a flyover — is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 8.

No formal committee action was taken on the projects during the meeting; staff encouraged members and the public to visit the completed sites.
