Decatur County highway department reports recent paving, ongoing maintenance and salt bid

Todd Houck of the Decatur County Highway Department updated the Board of Commissioners on routine road maintenance, recent paving and winter preparations at the Oct. 20 meeting.
Houck reported crews have been grading roads, replacing culverts and maintaining signs. He said Ridge 63 on 120 East has been reopened with no restrictions and that SC Construction completed additional contracted work this week.
Houck said 350 West was paved last week after railroad damage; crews installed a waterproof membrane on the bridge deck and paved from the deck to Base Road. He added he will prepare documents for the county auditor to pursue reimbursement or mitigation through claims related to the railroad damage.
On winter preparations, Houck said salt and instant sand are procured through a state bid process and that he had an award for 300 tons of salt after bidding. He said the county's current stock is limited and bays are being cleared to receive incoming material; he expects to place orders in coordination with other staff.
Regarding the recent chip‑and‑seal work, Houck said the department received a small number of phone inquiries but no notable complaints; he noted one approach paving call on 950 East. He also mentioned a recent annual fire‑extinguisher inspection and a new employee in that area.
Commissioners asked follow‑up questions about salt ordering and chip‑seal feedback; Houck responded the salt award is in hand and described steps to clear bays and bring in sand and salt mixes.
