Berrien County schedules public hearing Nov. 6 on Brownfield plan for Berrien Hills golf course redevelopment

Berrien County’s finance committee reported a brownfield resolution to enable redevelopment of the former Berrien Hills golf course into housing, and the county will hold a public hearing and consider board action on Nov. 6.

Dan Fetti, Berrien County’s community development director, briefed the finance committee on the brownfield resolution. The site plan was approved about three years ago, Fetti said, and the redevelopment proposal -- described to the committee as about 180 housing units with roughly one-third of the property designated for workforce housing -- is slated to proceed over a roughly three-year build-out. The finance committee is forwarding the resolution for a public hearing and board action on Nov. 6.

Commissioners were told the brownfield request will return to the board with a full public hearing, updates from staff and an opportunity for public comment before a vote. The committee did not vote on final board approval during the morning’s meeting; the board will review the brownfield resolution and supporting documents at the Nov. 6 meeting.

The finance chair said the November meeting would include a public hearing and full updates from Dan Fetti and staff; any motion or final board action will occur after the hearing.
