The Saint Paul City Council unanimously adopted a resolution supporting Taiko Arts Midwest’s request for general obligation bond funding to help secure a permanent home at an empty warehouse at 449 Front Avenue in the North End.
Jennifer Weir, executive director of Taiko Arts Midwest, told the council the art form blends music, dance and movement, and that the drums are intentionally loud: “The drums are very large and, when you play them, you play with your whole body,” she said, adding that the organization teaches youth and elders, performs locally and internationally, and seeks a multipurpose neighborhood event space.
Vice President Kim moved the resolution and noted Taiko Arts Midwest’s role in breaking gender barriers in the art form and in promoting cultural life in the neighborhood. Councilmembers who spoke praised the organization and its potential to expand arts access in the North End.
The resolution, identified in the agenda as Resolution 20-516-43, passed 7-0. Supporters said the bond request would help the nonprofit stabilize its operations by giving it a permanent rehearsal and performance home and a venue for community programming.
The council’s action does not itself award state bonding funds; it records municipal support for Taiko Arts Midwest’s request in the bonding process. Representative next steps for the organization include pursuing state bonding support and finalizing lease or acquisition details for the 449 Front Avenue site.
