Tucumcari OKs applications for state transportation grants for Third and Fourth Street projects

The City of Tucumcari Commission approved two resolutions to submit applications for state transportation funding for projects on Fourth Street and Third Street and authorized staff to pursue 5% match waivers.

The commission approved Resolution 2025-11 to apply for approximately $1,500,082 (project listed as Fourth Street, second-choice project) with a 5% local match estimated at $79,600, and separately approved Resolution 2025-12 to apply for approximately $1,610,000 for the city’s first-choice project (Third Street), with a 5% match estimated at $80,542. Commissioners also authorized staff to request match-waiver consideration as part of both applications; staff told the commission that if a waiver is not granted, the 5% match would come from gas-tax or street-department funds.

Why it matters: If funded, the projects would support street work and, for Third Street, utility work including water-line replacement; the outcome affects the city’s capital-improvement schedule and likely construction in public right-of-way.

During discussion staff noted that the Third Street application would allow funding of utilities under the road, while Fourth Street was submitted as a second-choice project. Both resolutions passed on roll call.

The commission instructed staff to proceed with final application paperwork and to track whether match waivers are granted; if not, staff will identify the local funding source to cover the 5% match. No local funding transfer was authorized at the meeting beyond the direction to seek a waiver.
