Council approves lease and land exchange with Iowa Army National Guard for expanded Boone airport facility

The Boone City Council on Tuesday approved a lease-and-exchange agreement with the Iowa Army National Guard to allow construction of a larger facility at the Boone Municipal Airport.
At a public hearing, Luke Slings, representing the Iowa Army National Guard, thanked staff and the airport commission and said the Guard’s current Boone facility of about 35,000 square feet is more than 30 years old and “is starting to show its age.” He said the new facility would “expand, more than triple the space that we have here in town” and would enable the Guard to expand missions, equipment and employees in Boone.
There were no public objections during the hearing. Council members moved to adopt a resolution authorizing the leasing-and-exchange agreement for airport real estate; the resolution passed on a roll-call vote.
The council’s action authorizes staff to finalize the exchange and leasing agreement documents so the Guard may proceed with the proposed replacement facility. The resolution does not itself include construction funding; Slings said the move is intended to keep and grow the Guard’s presence and mission in Boone.
No other public comments were made on the item.
