Council approves plan commission recommendations on small-business grants; commission discusses refining program

The Superior Common Council approved all three recommendations forwarded by the Plan Commission at its Oct. 14 meeting, including awards from the city's small-business grant program and a staff review of the program's design.
Councilor Fennessy, reporting for the Plan Commission, said the commission approved "a couple of small business grants" and discussed how to "refine" the program. The commission noted the program's balance is healthy and discussed ideas to promote the grants and use some excess funds for targeted projects.
When Councilor Sweeney asked about how soon a previous recipient may apply again, the commission response was that the waiting time to apply again for the small-business grant is three years. The commission also said nonprofit grant processes are handled differently; nonprofit awards are issued only "when we have money," the commission noted.
Councilor Fennessy moved to approve all three planning-commission recommendations; Councilor Grama seconded the motion. The council approved the motion by voice vote.
The commission also said a report exists showing grant awards going back three years and staff can provide a full report on past awards if councilors want it for further review.
