Council accepts public safety committee recommendations, approves traffic code changes and grants

The Superior Common Council approved multiple Public Safety Committee recommendations Tuesday, including departmental updates, grant acceptances and several changes to the city traffic code.
At the committee report, the fire department reported roughly "3,400 calls so far this year," continuing live fire and industrial training with Enbridge and Lake Spirit College, and that the new records and operations software is fully live. The department also installed new AED kiosks at Parker's Island and Loonsfoot Landing, the committee reported. The committee said progress on the new fire station "remains steady and on budget."
Police Chief Winterscheid reported the department will add three new hires who "are gonna begin academy training in January," and announced a $5,000 Novus grant to fund paid internships for local students. The committee noted call volumes were up about 4% year to date and that the city has seen decreases in shoplifting, burglaries and vehicle thefts while proactive traffic enforcement continues.
The Public Safety Committee voted to prohibit waterfowl hunting and firearm discharge near Grassy Point "for safety reasons," the chair said; the related Grassy Point ordinance was not on the council's agenda Tuesday and will appear at the next meeting due to timing.
The council then took up several traffic-code ordinances that were presented as committee recommendations. The council approved an ordinance to add 50 Third Avenue East at East First Street to the no-parking (even side) schedule; a motion on that item was recorded as moved by Councilor Alma Sykes and seconded by Councilor Anderson and carried by voice vote. The council also approved removing Ogden Avenue and Eighteenth Street as a two-way stop (motion by Councilor Elm(s), second by Councilor Johnson) and approved adding North Eighteenth Street at Ogden Avenue as a three-way stop (motion by Councilor Johnson). Finally, Councilor Holmes moved and Councilor Johnson seconded approval of the remaining four recommendations of the Public Safety Committee; the council approved those recommendations by voice vote.
The committee also formally accepted a Synovus community grant, according to the committee report. The meeting record does not reflect extended debate on these items.
The council closed the public safety business and moved on to other items.
