Tobacco Free Vigo urges community participation in Red Ribbon Week; proclamation planned at City Hall

Giles said the campaign, whose theme this year is “Life is a puzzle — solve it drug free,” will involve tabling in middle and high schools to engage students during lunchtime and provide information and activities encouraging tobacco- and drug-free choices. She said Red Ribbon Week is sponsored by the National Family Partnership and began in 1985 in memory of DEA agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena.
“Next Monday at 04:00 at the City hall, the mayor is going to be doing a proclamation, designating this Red Ribbon Week for Vigo County and Terre Haute and Vigo County,” Giles said. She asked commissioners and community members to attend the proclamation or visit participating schools.
Giles told the commission she had sent event details to them the night before and provided stickers to commissioners because the group is budget-constrained.
The commissioners did not take formal action on the item; it was part of the public-comment period.
