Nelson County updates FEMA road-inspection results and ongoing road projects

Nelson County staff told the Fiscal Court they have begun lining up repairs to roads damaged by recent weather events and are working with FEMA to seek reimbursement under public assistance programs.
Public works staff described work at Weller Loop and other locations where a large water line required patching and asphalt repair. The industrial park sewer extension behind Flower Foods was reported finished and other residential water projects have nearly completed meter and hydrant work pending backordered parts.
Staff said a FEMA site inspection team recently conducted on-site verification of the county’s identified road damages. Those verification reports were sent to FEMA regional staff for approval; county staff said regional approval will determine which projects receive federal reimbursement. The court was told FEMA will fund repairs that return infrastructure to pre-damage condition but that separate improvement funding would require an additional program and approval.
County staff added an eighth project to the FEMA submission to request funding for a rollover cleanout; staff said approval was uncertain but that the county is trying to move the item up the review chain. Officials said several federal teams visited the site to help determine responsibility for a river-area cleanout and to identify which agency’s budget would cover the work.
Road department personnel reported other ongoing work: shoulder and paving operations on Barristown Road (Highway 247), landscaping and rock armoring at Weller Loop, and snow-preparation planning. The department also reported equipment additions: a Western Star truck in use and two more vehicles expected from out of state in the coming week.
Court members asked staff to continue monitoring contractor performance and schedule impacts. Staff said they plan to post cold-weather homeowner guidance on county social media accounts and to keep the court updated as FEMA regional reviews return.
