Supervisors review Coconino County positions ahead of County Supervisors Association legislative summit

"If you would just turn to tab 8… the goldenrod or a blue, a green document under tab 9, those are documents we have created here in government affairs for you," Peterson said, explaining how to use the packet. Government affairs manager Sean Johnson and others walked the board through the agenda and emphasized that Wednesday’s CSA work session is the time for discussion, with the full CSA membership voting on Thursday.
Key county priorities and suggested leads: Staff recommended supervisors take lead roles on a number of items: wildfire response funding recapitalization (recommended lead: Supervisor Judy Begay), public safety retirement funding (PSPRS) (recommended lead: Supervisor Lena Fowler), transportation funding (recommended lead: Vice Chair Jeronimo Vasquez) and homeowner insurance affordability (recommended lead: Supervisor Tammy Ontiveras). Many other county and other‑county proposals were discussed; staff suggested reading the room at the summit and said positions can be changed during the session.
Examples of other proposals discussed: The board reviewed items from other counties including permanent crop taxation (Cochise County), assessor/compensation equalization (Yavapai) and several Cochise‑sponsored items affecting open meeting law and seller disclosure. Staff recommended opposing some items and supporting others based on anticipated statewide effects and the county’s interests.
Next steps: Staff will prepare 'salmon' updates to put in binders if positions change at the summit; supervisors can delegate speaking roles to staff or adjust positions after the Wednesday work session. Supervisors were reminded that the summit proceeds fast and that judicious use of speaking time is often advisable.
