Marathon County committee authorizes publication of proposed 2026 budget

The Human Resources, Finance and Property Committee of Marathon County voted to authorize publication of the proposed 2026 budget, including an amendment increasing projected sales-tax revenue by $525,580 to fund an HVAC capital improvement project. The committee set a public hearing for Nov. 3, 2025, at 6 p.m. and scheduled final action on the budget for Nov. 11, 2025, at 6 p.m.
The committee’s finance director, Sam, said the next steps after the committee vote will be notification to local newspapers and posting the consolidated proposed-budget summary on the county website. “The next step once the approval happens is the notification to the papers and then also will be posted on our website,” Sam said. The published summary will present the general fund and other funds and include 2024 actuals, the 2025 budget, 2025 actuals through Aug. 31, 2025, a projection through year-end and the proposed 2026 figures.
Committee members discussed timing for state aid and valuation updates. A committee member asked about General Transportation Aids (GTA) and equalized valuations; Sam said GTAs typically arrive in mid‑October and that equalized valuations had been certified earlier in the fall, with net new construction included in those figures. The committee did not change the publication schedule on that basis.
A motion to authorize publication “as approved by this committee with the additional amendment” was made from the floor (mover not specified in the record) and was seconded by Supervisor Hart. The motion carried on an affirmative voice vote. The committee announced a quorum was present (vice chair Marshall and Supervisor Poole participating online; Chair Gibbs, Supervisor Lemmer and Supervisor Hart in the room) and noted Representative Reynolds was excused.
Committee members indicated the budget summary will be published in the standard format used in prior years and that the publication will state the dates and times for the public hearing and the final budget approval meeting. The committee set its next meeting for the 28th at 3 p.m. and adjourned after completing the publication authorization.
