Kingsport board approves secure entrance at Korcox Academy and playground upgrades at Jackson Elementary

The Kingsport City Schools Board of Education on Oct. 14 approved two facilities contracts: a $68,956 low bid to add a secure main entrance at Korcox Academy and a $60,779.63 contract to replace two pieces of playground equipment at Jackson Elementary.
Board President Dr. True called for and the board voted to accept the contracts after staff presentations. Mr. Fry (presenter) told the board the Korcox Academy work drew two bids and the low bid from Custom Building Group would be funded from a public school security grant. Fry recommended a 6% contingency (about $4,137) and said architect fees and contingency bring the project estimate to approximately $76,343 as presented to the board.
The Jackson Elementary playground work will use the Sourcewell cooperative contract with PlayWorld Preferred Inc., Mr. Fry said. The playground contract—$60,779.63—will be paid from the district’s annual capital improvement funds and the general purpose school fund.
Board Member Jamie (board member) asked whether the Jackson playground structure was wheelchair-accessible. Jamie said she had discussed accessibility with school staff and noted the district plans a new elementary school on the Jackson site in five to six years. Jamie said no students currently at Jackson require mobility accessibility and that staff described ways students with short-term mobility limitations could use the equipment and that the site has a second playground that could be used if needed. "I did spend a little time asking that and was really pleased with the answers that I got," Jamie said.
Mr. Fry said the Korcox work is expected to be scheduled over winter break but cautioned lead times for hardware could affect timing. The board approved both recommended actions by voice vote; no roll-call tallies were recorded in the meeting minutes.
