Vigo County CIB: September saw 9 events, $78,000 gross revenue; staff report maintenance and camera repair issues

The Vigo County Capital Improvement Board heard an operations report on Oct. 22 that showed nine events in September accounting for 14 event days, 932 attendees and $78,000 in gross revenue.

The operations update, delivered by staff member Celeste, said the month included repeat and large users: an Air Force gala with about 380 attendees and an international five-day conference that brought many hotel room nights. “We had 9 events in September, which accounted for 14 total event days. Attendance for the month was 932,” Celeste said.

Celeste told the board the facility had several maintenance matters: Indiana Water replaced a water meter in the mechanical room, and the firm Envelop I Q replaced signal cables in garage elevators and repaired security-camera cabling that had snapped in places. She said the board's office discovered higher-than-expected billing for some repair work; staff worked with vendors to revise pricing and are seeking an alternate camera vendor because Envelop no longer holds a service contract for the system.

On sales, Celeste reported 10 new contracts totaling about $85,000 in business for the preceding month and a sales pipeline she described as “close to $1.3 million” in prospective business and roughly 4,000 hotel room nights across future years. She also provided year-to-date breakdowns by event type and noted that conventions and meetings are the largest sources of hotel room nights and revenue.

Board members pressed for context on year-over-year hotel-room numbers after one member observed a large drop in rooms consumed through September 2025 versus the same period in 2024. Celeste said event timing and association cycles explain much of the variance — some large groups book only every few years — and that limited hotel inventory, space constraints and high hotel rates can cause lost business.

Celeste also highlighted a recent multi-day conference for the Indiana Primary Healthcare Association that used the building in a novel layout and generated substantial downtown economic activity, saying the client and attendees were satisfied.

The report closed with routine operational items: biannual hood inspections, monthly fire-extinguisher/AED/elevator inspections, the change of some vending-service contracts, and a note that the Larry Bird Museum has recorded attendance of just over 15,000 to date in 2025.

Less urgent follow-ups noted by staff included finalizing camera-service contracting and continuing to pursue pipeline contracts later in the year.
