Benton Harbor public-safety inspectors receive national Community Risk Reduction award

The City of Benton Harbor on Tuesday recognized members of the public-safety department after the city’s fire and code compliance staff received the national Community Risk Reduction Program of the Year award in Kansas City.
City Manager Alex Little introduced the presentation and said the program spotlights the city’s approach to code enforcement and prevention. “We received the Community Risk Reduction Program of the Year award,” Little said.
Present at the meeting were three of five inspectors: Dr. Paul Dell (an emergency-room doctor who also serves as a firefighter inspector), Tim Tracy (firefighter inspector) and Maurice Bruce (code investigator). Little said two other inspectors were attending a fire-investigation class in Detroit.
Little told the commission Benton Harbor’s code-compliance firefighters focus on quality of life and life safety and said prevention through code enforcement can save more lives than responding to burning buildings. “We will save more lives through code enforcement, fire prevention than we ever will going inside burning buildings,” he said.
The commission acknowledged the award and thanked the public-safety staff for their work. No action items or funding changes accompanied the presentation.
