Taos County accepts $227,000 state grant for Rio Trampas hazardous fuels reduction

The Taos County Commission on Oct. 7 approved agreement WP26-02-3900 with the New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department (EMNRD) Forestry Division to carry out hazardous-fuels reduction work in the Rio Trampas area.
County staff said the agreement provides $227,000 in state funding to implement fuels reduction on 256 acres of Forest Service lands in southern Taos County. Commissioners and staff described the county’s fire risk as high and urged continued, methodical targeting of high-risk areas.
Commissioner Brush, who supported the item, thanked JR Logan for methodical area selection and said the work will help homeowners concerned about insurance cancellations in higher-risk zones. The commission approved the agreement by roll call.
Motion and vote: Commissioner Brush moved to approve agreement WP26-02-3900; Commissioner Romero seconded. Roll-call votes were affirmative and the motion carried.
Staff said the work is designed to reduce wildfire risk and that area selection prioritizes highest-risk parcels. The agreement covers work on Forest Service lands and uses state forestry funding; staff did not discuss a county match in the Oct. 7 presentation.
