Monroe County approves $43,900 state grant to form major crash investigation team

Monroe County commissioners on Thursday approved a $43,900 grant from the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, a pass-through award from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, to establish a countywide major crash investigation team staffed by Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputies.
The grant, presented by Kyle Molden of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, will cover overtime, some equipment, computer software and continuing education for deputies assigned to investigate fatal and other major traffic incidents countywide, including in the town of Ellettsville. "The total grant funds amount to $43,900," Molden said.
The sheriff’s office will draw on already trained deputies and maintain 24/7 availability for major crash responses, Molden said. The county will serve as the grantee; the town of Ellettsville is expected to provide a limited number of officers to assist, but any formal participation by Ellettsville will require a separate interlocal agreement and legal review, county officials said. County staff also noted an MOU involving Ellettsville should be reviewed by the town attorney before being signed.
Commissioners were told the grant period has already begun and runs through the state fiscal year. County staff said the state is seeking three signatories on the grant documents: the sheriff, the county auditor and the president of the board, via electronic delivery.
President of the board (name not specified) moved to approve the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute grant; a commissioner seconded the motion. The board voted in favor, with the chair saying, "Motion carries 2 0." County staff said the grant approval will be ratified at the board’s next regular meeting.
No public comment was offered during the work session on the grant. Officials said purchases and operations can begin once signatures are in place and required reviews are complete.
