Heavy August rainfall caused localized water intrusion at several Germantown schools; district reports repairs complete for start of year

Buildings & Grounds staff told the Germantown School District committee on Sept. 16 that historic rainfall in August caused localized water intrusion at several district sites but that crews completed repairs to ensure schools were ready for the start of the school year.

"The rainfall did not have an impact on the buildings being ready for the start of school," a buildings and grounds staff member said, adding that ceiling tiles, flooring and furniture were repaired or replaced as needed.

Staff reported the orchestra pit at Germantown High School flooded after a sump/floor pump float switch failed; a staff member discovered the problem about 12:30 a.m. and the team obtained a replacement pump early that morning from a local Menards. County Line’s courtyard pitch led to water in the art room and library; the report said roughly a 15‑by‑19‑foot area of VCT tiles curled and required replacement, and the art room was displaced for one day. At MacArthur, several ceiling tiles and approximately 11 books were damaged. Rockfield and Kennedy schools showed no notable water intrusion, staff said.

Trustees asked for photographic documentation. "We're missing photos of the damage. The report would be much nicer if a few photos," a trustee said during the meeting. Staff agreed to include photos and captions in future reports and to consult the district’s roofing consultant about stronger measures during future roof replacements.

The report was presented for information; no funding decisions or formal motions tied to the rainwater damage were made at the Sept. 16 meeting.
