City staff presented a preliminary concept for an America 250 (semicentennial) project that would engage residents in creating patriotic murals and other community activities. The rough cost estimate discussed was about $8,000 for a mural project, and commissioners agreed a subcommittee should be formed to plan events, fundraising, locations and any city budget requests.
Commissioner Glissman and others described a participatory mural concept in which many residents would paint small sections that assemble into a larger image. Commissioners emphasized the need for a formal committee to coordinate fundraising and logistics; Commissioner Petrie volunteered to participate. Staff said formal formation of a subcommittee and any motion to do so would be brought to the commission at a subsequent meeting if necessary, but commissioners indicated support for moving forward and recruiting citizens and business partners to help organize events.
No city funds were committed and staff said the project could proceed with a mix of donations and potential budget allocation if the subcommittee recommends it. The item will return to a future meeting with committee membership and a proposed plan.
