The Lapeer City Commission approved removal of 21 existing overhead street lights, including 14 poles and associated wires and equipment, as part of the Pine Street, Park Street and Parking Lot 9 project. The commission authorized a cost not to exceed $30,034.50 and delegated signature authority to the director of public works and the city manager.
Commissioner Swindell moved the measure, which was supported by Commissioner Bridal and carried on roll call. Staff said the approval provides advance placement in the contractor schedule and does not obligate the city to begin physical work until the project starts next year. City staff and the contractor will notify DTE Electric to coordinate pole removal; managers said they had experienced delays with DTE on a prior job and wanted to avoid similar scheduling problems.
Commission discussion focused on how the removals would interact with planned decorative replacements and overall project budget. Staff said a photometric lighting plan will be provided as part of the contract and that final decisions on replacement fixtures and the extent of overhead wiring will be subject to that plan and to future budget decisions. Commissioners also noted the authorization is cancellable if the city decides not to proceed.
The motion passed with all voting members recorded in favor. Staff will proceed with contract paperwork and return any final design or budgeting changes to the commission for approval before construction begins.
