At a Humboldt Unified town-hall, interim superintendent candidate Brett Dahl outlined plans to prioritize rigorous, consistent curriculum resources and to protect teacher time for professional learning.
Dahl said the district is working on a writing curriculum adoption and has engaged teachers and board members for input. “We have to have the resources,” he said, adding that a unified, primary curriculum is necessary so students receive a consistent experience across the district’s schools.
On teacher support, Dahl described a recent change to the teacher calendar that added two extra days for professional development and said the district will use Project Momentum funds to convene staff. He named an upcoming all-district training on Oct. 31 that will be held at the Prescott Resort and called out the district’s curriculum team and instructional specialists as deployable supports for classroom teachers.
Dahl emphasized tier 1 instruction — strong initial classroom teaching — as central to reducing the need for interventions. “The better your tier 1 instruction is, the less interventions that you need,” he said, and argued that principals must be instructional leaders who get into classrooms.
No formal curricular adoption vote was taken at the meeting; Dahl described ongoing adoption work and teacher engagement.
