Interim candidate Brett Dahl emphasizes learning, consistency and collaboration for Humboldt Unified

Brett Dahl, the interim superintendent candidate for the Humboldt Unified School District, told a packed town-hall that his top priorities are a districtwide focus on student learning, building collaborative trust and aligning resources to support instruction.
Dahl said the district should adopt “a vision to be a destination district known for a culture of achievement” and added, “all students will learn at high levels because of what we do.” He told the audience he intends to build that vision with teachers, board members and community members rather than impose it from the office.
Dahl framed teaching, not administrative activity, as the district’s primary lever for student success. “There is clear evidence that the number one variable in student learning and success is the teacher,” he said, adding that leaders should shift from a mindset of “did I teach it?” to “did kids learn it?”
On longevity and leadership stability, Dahl cited turnover in the district’s top job as a barrier to long-term progress. He said there have been four superintendents in roughly six years and argued that sustained implementation requires consistency. “You can’t snap your fingers and do it all at once. There’s implementation steps, and it means you build trust, and you build a collective commitment,” he said.
Dahl described his approach to leadership as servant-based: listening, engaging staff and putting people in positions to succeed. He said he would use a stakeholder-driven process to create a final vision, calling the vision “the boss” that guides decisions.
In closing remarks, Dahl said his career path and long residence in the district influence his candidacy. He noted his local ties — including coaching and school leadership positions — and said he sees himself continuing the work in Humboldt Unified over the next five years if selected.
The town-hall was facilitated by Danny Brown and included brief audience questions and a feedback form made available to attendees.
Dahl’s remarks at the town-hall were part of the governing-board superintendent search process; no board vote or formal appointment occurred at the event.
