County receives kickoff update on WOJB/Gencom tower project; alternate tower may improve redundancy

County staff reported a kickoff meeting with Gencom on the WOJB tower replacements and said the project team identified an alternate tower site (previously proposed for Edgewater) that is higher and on elevated property. Staff said the taller site will increase redundancy by enabling four towers to operate in a ring so that if one tower fails, traffic can be rerouted through others. The county reported the proposed lease for the new tower is about $1,000 per month and that it is negotiating that rate downward from the initial proposal.
Staff said they are continuing negotiations related to the LCO tower and that weekly coordination meetings are taking place; one staff member said the contractor hopes to start construction this fall on some towers and to continue work through the winter and into spring.
County staff described the change as a net benefit despite a higher monthly lease because of improved coverage and redundancy; the tribal police’s use of towers and coordination with other towers was discussed as part of overall system planning.
