Sheriff reports patrol trends, crash totals, grants and positive jail inspection
Summary
The Sawyer County sheriff updated the Public Safety Committee on lower patrol call volumes, crash statistics, two traffic-safety grants, a mobile app project and an annual jail inspection that yielded an excellent report with only minor suggestions.
The Sawyer County sheriff’s lieutenant reported that patrol call volumes dipped to 696 for the latest period; a three-month trend peaked at 861 in July and declined to 742 in August. For September, deputies issued 21 traffic citations, nine written warnings and one non-traffic citation. The lieutenant said there were 11 crashes in the reporting period, including two with personal injury and one fatality, bringing year-to-date totals to 208 crashes, 47 personal injury crashes and three fatalities.
The sheriff’s office said the Wisconsin Department of Traffic Safety has opened grant applications and has offered two awards to the county: a $12,000 speeding enforcement grant and a $5,000 seat belt grant. Both grants require a 25% soft match, which the sheriff’s office said will be met by accounting for traffic contacts from regular patrol officers and by using task force partners (currently the City of Hayward).
The sheriff’s office also reported work with a vendor (OCV) to develop a mobile application for agency information. On the jail, the sheriff said the average daily population was 64 for the month, 58 year-to-date and 53 in September; five inmates were on electronic monitoring. A state jail inspector conducted the annual inspection and issued an “excellent” report with only a few minor suggestions and no required changes.
