The Buckeye Valley Board of Education completed first readings of a package of updated board policies and approved routine consent agenda items while asking staff for clarifications on several provisions.
Superintendent/administrator Kelly and members of the superintendent’s policy committee presented the first reading of multiple policies and an updated organizational chart. The board approved the consent agenda — which included classified substitutes and employment updates, supplemental coaching appointments, volunteer approvals, and two donations — and agreed to review the second readings at the next meeting.
Board members raised several substantive questions during the discussion. On a device-usage policy, members asked whether the prohibition on device use during the school day applied to students riding on school vehicles, and whether policy language should be clarified for overnight trips and field trips. Kelly and other administrators said practices can vary by trip and by supervising staff, and that some policies explicitly prohibit devices during the school day but allow limited use during vehicle travel; board members requested staff provide clear language for the second reading.
Members also asked for clearer definitions and limits in the transportation policy, including how the district defines a ‘field trip,’ how many transportation costs the board will assume for trips, and which official should approve non-district riders or preschool-age children on trip vehicles. The board asked staff to provide rationale and recommended edits by e-mail ahead of the second reading so members can review changes outside the meeting.
The consent agenda noted two donations: one for $1,000 from the Ladies Auxiliary of the Eagles and $829 from Bridal Distributing of Delaware; it also listed approved overnight trips sponsored by middle school programs and winter coaches and clubs. The board discussed a state-mandated special education policy resolution that follows a state model and noted that twice‑yearly policy updates are routine.
No final policy adoptions occurred at the meeting; the board will take second readings at its next regular session.
