Cape Girardeau 63 introduces 'Portrait of a Graduate' as part of CSIP

Cape Girardeau Public Schools (Cape Girardeau 63) officials outlined the district's Portrait of a Graduate framework as part of its Continuous School Improvement Plan (CSIP) on a district podcast, saying the framework will be used in report cards and instruction across grade levels.
District leaders said the Portrait of a Graduate is the academic centerpiece of the CSIP and focuses on five core skill areas intended to support student success beyond traditional academic subjects. "Portrait of a Graduate is really a collaborative, effort from all the administrators across the district," said Dr. Bryce Beck, deputy superintendent and the district's Portrait of a Graduate champion.
The district described the CSIP as built on three pillars: Learn, Elevate and Lead. Officials said the Portrait of a Graduate targets five skill components — communication, collaboration, critical thinking, adaptability and becoming a responsible citizen — which staff will track alongside standard academic measures.
Dr. Beck said the framework was developed with input from building-level administrators and academic service coordinators. "We had to really lean on our academic service coordinators. So Tina Schuessler and Nick Cato... thought that based on how the report card was already formatted for the various grade levels, it would look appropriate to kinda fit it into how that model works already," he said.
The district said the Portrait of a Graduate will appear differently by grade level: at the elementary level it will be incorporated into standards-based narrative reporting, while at the secondary level it will appear as a comment on traditional report cards. The district also pointed to ongoing communications efforts, including a weekly feature called CT Friday Fab 3 highlighting three accomplishments each week, and said the Portrait of a Graduate will be part of public conversations with families and community groups.
Officials did not provide specific performance metrics, dates for full implementation districtwide or budget details on the podcast.
