Community group asks Niagara Falls board for transparency in superintendent search

A coalition called the Niagara Community Information Group (NCI Group) asked the Niagara Falls City School District board on Oct. 15 to provide a written response about the superintendent search process, including timeline, public access to applications and how the board will ensure the selected superintendent will address persistent low performance in multiple district schools.
Michael Barksdale read the group’s certified letter into the public record. The letter, submitted by NCI Group founder and CEO Dr. Tina Gregory Schultz, requested that the board clarify when the district first learned of the current superintendent’s retirement, when the search officially began, opening and closing dates for applications, and how the board will align the search with New York State Education Department (NYSED) and New York State School Boards Association guidelines to ensure community participation and equitable access for candidates.
The group asked that the board embed measurable goals in the new superintendent’s contract for improving schools designated as Targeted Support and Improvement (TSI or ATSI) and requested a written response within five business days. The letter cited district performance concerns, noting that nine of 11 schools are designated TSI or ATSI and raising equity concerns for Black, multiracial, economically disadvantaged students and students with disabilities.
The board recorded the letter in the public comment portion of the meeting; the transcript shows the letter was placed in the record and the group requested a prompt written reply.
