Sheriff Mark Daniels told listeners on KWCD that the Cochise County Sheriff's Charity Ride will take place on Nov. 1, with participants departing from the Nissan dealership next to the American Southwest Credit Union. He encouraged people to buy tickets at the Cochise County sheriff's website and noted that proceeds support local nonprofits.
Daniels said beneficiary organizations include the Bisbee Community Coaster Race and the Champions for Youth Foundation in Wilcox. He said one beneficiary, the Champions for Youth Foundation, will receive $10,000 to support amenities for its recently completed 56,000-square-foot Wilcox Farm Ranch and Youth Events Center, including bleachers, restrooms and a commercial kitchen.
Representatives of the Bisbee Community Coaster Race described the event’s history and needs on the show. Robert Donahue, racetrack coordinator, said the race dates back more than a century and now runs as a children's event, typically held on July 4. Michael Donahue, vice president of the Coaster Race committee, said the race relies on donations, volunteers and safety improvements tied to donations and that the race costs roughly $3,000 to run in a typical year.
Robert Donahue described the race’s preparation process for young participants: finding a coaster, successful trial runs down a cut-off route and a shakedown run the week before the event. He said entries typically range around 19–24 coasters and that prizes and safety upgrades are funded from donations.
Susan (Treasurer and co-chair of the Champions for Youth Foundation) said the group's Wilcox Farm Ranch and Youth Events Center at Quail Park recently completed a 56,000-square-foot arena and that the sheriff's group’s $10,000 will go toward amenities. She asked for community donations and noted the foundation received an Arizona State Parks and Trails grant and grassroots donations to get to the current stage.
Daniels described the Charity Ride logistics: registration/ticket information is available at the Cochise County sheriff’s website (www.cochise.az.gov/sheriff), tickets remain available, and the ride typically gathers several hundred participants who depart in a procession of off-road vehicles, side-by-sides and motorcycles. He said proceeds go to multiple local 501(c)(3) recipients and that the event supports programs such as Shop with a Cop and search-and-rescue funding.
