Duncanville ISD presents beginning‑of‑year assessment results and intent to apply for LASO curriculum supports

District leaders presented beginning‑of‑year baseline assessment data to the Board of Trustees and informed the board the district intends to apply for the Learning Acceleration Support Opportunities (LASO) grant to support implementation of highly‑qualified instructional materials.
Dr. Samuel Nicks introduced the update and turned the presentation to the district’s coordinator of assessment and accountability, Mr. Bowens, who summarized results from I‑Ready and MAP. Bowens said the district used MAP primarily for secondary students and I‑Ready for elementary students to reduce duplicate testing. He described national percentile placements for some assessments around the 30th–40th percentiles and said that while the data show areas of concern, there were also “modest year‑over‑year gains in some grades and subjects,” citing double‑digit gains in several elementary grades’ district common assessments.
Bowens outlined how the district reads adaptive, norm‑referenced MAP results (percentile ranks) and I‑Ready performance bands. He said middle school and some high‑school subjects show the most opportunity for growth, and that district common assessments (DCAs) are being used to refine pacing guides and target interventions. Dr. Nicks and board members stressed that the district’s goal is to advance each student by roughly a grade level over the school year and that mid‑year and end‑of‑year results would be used to measure progress.
Separately, Dr. Nicks notified the board that the district is applying for the LASO 4 grant to support implementation of highly‑qualified instructional materials. He said the district previously partnered with SustainEd for coaching through LASO 3 and described SustainEd’s in‑class coaching as effective; he said the district may again select SustainEd or another approved technical assistance provider if the grant is awarded. LASO funds may support provider fees, instructional materials and partial salary support for instructional coaches if awarded.
