Fire chief says FEMA grant will fund firefighter cancer screenings and automatic CPR devices

Mesa Fire Chief Mary Cameli said the city has been awarded a FEMA grant that the department will use for sworn firefighter cancer screenings and to purchase automatic CPR devices.
"On the FEMA grant that we were awarded. Yes. Thank you for acknowledging. We're excited that it's gonna be used for firefighter screenings for cancer and also, for our made CPR devices too so we won't have to be standing up in the back of an ambulance as we're doing CPR en route to the hospital," Chief Mary Cameli said during the Oct. 20 study session. She said both screenings and equipment "will be very beneficial to us and the community."
Council members commended the grant, noting they have lost firefighters to job-related cancers and that automatic CPR devices have saved lives. "I've had the opportunity to use those new devices that that we're buying, and they are far more effective than one of us standing over trying to do CPR. So they've... saved lives with those," a council member said.
