Local nonprofits request city funding; council to consider awards at next meeting

Four community organizations spoke at public comment to request local funding and to describe services they provide to Jeffersontown residents.
Marlon Cummins, executive director of Jefferson Town Area Ministries (JAM), requested $50,000 — the same amount sought last year — for programs that include food distribution, utility and rental assistance and mortgage support. Cummins said JAM provided food to about 130 families during one recent distribution and described daily pickup routes from local grocers and homebound delivery programs for seniors and disabled residents. He said JAM receives funding from a Community Ministry Network supported in part by LG&E and the Louisville Water Foundation and that the network seeks to coordinate referrals across 13 local agencies.
Grace Boucher and Addie Singelab, representing the St. Edward eighth-grade class of 2026 trip committee, asked the council to consider a donation to help the class raise $66,000 to send 36 students on a four-day educational trip to New York City in March. The students described fundraising the group has already done, including a community yard sale that raised more than $5,000, and said they will continue local fundraising efforts.
Laura Stewart spoke for the Saint Nick Fund and said volunteers will again run a holiday shopping program (this is the fund’s 17th year) and that they have relocated setup to the Myers on Hurstbourne, which has increased participation.
Paula — identified as representing USA Cares, a veterans nonprofit headquartered in Jeffersontown — asked for continued support for a career transition program that helps service members move to civilian employment. She said call volume from job-seeking veterans has increased and that the organization works with Fort Knox and other partners to place veterans locally; Paula said USA Cares was requesting the same amount from the city as last year but did not specify a dollar amount.
Council members asked a few clarifying questions. One council member said awards for the funding requests would be considered at the next meeting and Bill (city official) confirmed awards would be made at that time. No votes or awards were recorded at the meeting.
Outlook: Council will review available funds and consider awarding grants at the next council meeting.
