Committee recommends adopting I Love You Guys standard response protocols; board amends language to include families and community

Summary
Committee voted to recommend a new district school safety policy adopting the I Love You Guys Standard Response Protocols (SRP), agreed to include families, students and community in the policy language, and moved the recommendation to the full board on consent.
District administrators presented a proposed district policy to adopt the I Love You Guys Standard Response Protocols (SRP) as the district’s formal school safety protocol. Staff explained the SRP framework defines five actions — hold, secure, lockdown, evacuate and shelter — and that many districts and local law enforcement use the same language so schools and first responders “speak the same language” in an emergency. Staff said the Office of School Safety supports the SRP and that the district already conducts drills, shares procedures with families (including translations), and uses the Speak Up, Speak Out (SUSO) reporting tool for anonymous reports.
Board members discussed policy wording. Miss Lopez proposed explicitly naming families and community members alongside law enforcement and first responders in the policy’s opening paragraph to reflect the district’s community education and reporting efforts. District staff incorporated suggested language during the meeting to read: “a proactive and comprehensive approach to school safety rooted in a shared responsibility and cooperation with law enforcement, first responders, families, students, staff, and the community is the most effective way to prevent, prepare for, or respond to any emergency or crisis event.” Board members also discussed how and when safety information is shared with families and the public and noted that some safety details remain appropriate for closed‑session discussion.
A motion to recommend approval of the new school safety policy as amended was moved and seconded and approved by voice vote; the committee forwarded the recommendation to the full board for placement on the consent agenda. Staff said Neola (policy service) will assign a policy number once the board adopts the policy, and staff described public‑facing outreach plans including a district web page with SRP videos, classroom SRP charts (translated into Spanish), flyers and standardized templates for communications after drills or incidents. Staff stated I Love You Guys and Speak Up, Speak Out are free resources, with Speak Up, Speak Out hosted by the State of Wisconsin Office of School Safety and funded through state appropriation for materials and reimbursement of some local costs for posters/banners.
No final adoption occurred at this committee meeting; the item will appear on the full board consent agenda.
