Jennifer Schute, speaking on behalf of Conrad School of Science parents, told the Red Clay board Oct. 15 that repeated flooding, standing water and visible mold in the school’s boys’ locker room pose health and safety concerns for students.
“I have provided pictures for you as well,” Schute said. She described ceiling tiles with water stains and mold, standing water in locker areas, broken lockers, exposed wiring under removed ceiling tiles, a broken water fountain and a shower drain that she said had been closed “15 years ago” yet still shows mold. Schute said one student who cut himself afterward acquired a staph infection.
Schute asked the board to “take a look at this and put into what is required, which is the maintenance of these different facilities,” and said teachers had been reluctant to escalate the issue out of concern for professional repercussions. She asked the board to consider mechanisms for anonymous reporting from staff.
Schute referenced “Delaware code title 142307” while urging action and provided photographs to board members. She also raised a separate safety concern about students walking across Maryland Avenue to Richardson Park with equipment.
Board members acknowledged the public comment and the board later noted on its agenda that follow‑up would be provided on construction, design and renovations in the district’s future meetings. During adjournment the board president agreed to ensure the board is updated on follow‑up for space and maintenance issues at Conrad.
No board action on repairs or specific funding was recorded at the meeting. Schute’s submission asked the board to investigate and to ensure required maintenance is performed for the safety of students.
