VDOT reports road maintenance, Hardy Road to be posted at 45 mph on Franklin side; county discusses local traffic calming

Crow Gap Road (Route 6657): VDOT staff said there is a short segment that becomes unposted gravel; the agency plans to add advisory signs, "not recommended for through traffic" messages and winter non-maintenance warnings to alert drivers to narrow, mountainous conditions.
Construction impacts and backups: VDOT acknowledged current lane closures and construction activity on Route 220 that have caused backups and said staff are coordinating to minimize delays. The county and VDOT will continue to monitor traffic on projects and consider adjustments.
Local traffic concerns: Several supervisors raised safety questions about the intersection at Route 122 and Smith Mountain Lake park access, rear-end collisions on curves, and pedestrian safety at the park. VDOT staff and county supervisors said they will pursue traffic-calming options and coordinate with the sheriff's office on enforcement and potential post-mounted devices.
