Morton awards two public-works contracts totaling about $4.15 million in bids

The Morton Board of Trustees approved two separate public-works contract awards: an Illinois 98/Birchwood Street intersection improvement project and renovations to the Street Department building.
For the intersection project at Erie and Flint Avenue the board accepted a low bid of $2,281,000 and authorized execution of the contract with the winning bidder. The director of public works said four contractors bid the job; the two lowest bids were within 2.5% of each other and the award is close to the department’s budget estimate. He said the project is expected to be funded with Motor Fuel Tax (MFT) funds and that staff will follow up at the next meeting with an MFT resolution to release the funds.
Separately the board accepted a $1,869,000 bid for renovations to the street-department building, awarding the contract to Zilberst and Sons (as named in the bid). The public-works director said two bidders submitted proposals for the renovation and that the contract includes a $90,000 contingency allowance to cover vendor-specific items such as vehicle lifts.
The director said both phase-1 projects came in under the $2.5 million that had been budgeted for FY 2026 and that, overall, the village will manage more than $4 million in public-works work this cycle. Trustees held brief discussion and then approved both motions by roll call.
Ending: Staff said it will return with the MFT spending resolution and any necessary contract summaries if contingency amounts are expected to be exceeded.
