Alexander County recognizes junior rescue squad for second-place finish and sportsmanship award

The Board of Commissioners formally recognized four junior members of the Alexander County Rescue Squad on Aug. 6 after they finished second at the junior rescue competition and received the Chad Smith Memorial Spirit Award.
At its Aug. 6 meeting, the Alexander County Board of Commissioners recognized four junior members of the Alexander County Rescue Squad who competed in the state junior rescue competition in Fayetteville.
A rescue-squad representative told the board the team — Cade Church, Coley Watner, Hunter Dancy and Wyatt Johnson — trained over the summer under advisors Cole Sharp and Riley Whitener and finished second in the state competition. The representative said the team also received the Chad Smith Memorial Spirit Award, an honor normally given to senior teams, for sportsmanship.
The presenter said organizers and the North Carolina Association of Rescue and EMS praised the junior team for both competitive performance and sportsmanship. Commissioner Pennell presented county pins to the members and invited family members forward for group photos. The representative said the same group was recognized recently by the local school board.
Commissioners thanked the young participants and their families and noted the event as an example of community investment in emergency-response volunteers.
