Superintendent Damon Wright told the Santa Clara Unified School District Board of Trustees the district will pursue a rightsizing process grounded in an "students first, equity driven" lens and announced a community forum on Oct. 22 to present enrollment and financial data guiding potential changes.
Wright said the district will use learning‑walks to observe classrooms and improve instruction; he described an upcoming initiative by the district’s MTSS committee to visit classrooms to launch work on tier‑1 instruction. "We reviewed enrollment data, historical enrollment data... We're gonna run a transparent process," Wright said.
At the meeting the teachers’ union representative, who identified herself as Miss Wysocki of UTSC, told the board educators are fatigued and urged transparent communication, earlier involvement of teachers and a slower implementation timeline. "A 5 month rollout... is very fast," she said, adding that the union requests "transparency, clear communication, and collaboration in the hard conversations and decisions to be made."
The superintendent also highlighted outreach to Spanish‑speaking families, including two input sessions, and encouraged participation in a calendar committee survey open through Oct. 17. He said the district will consider best practices from nearby districts and return‑on‑investment when evaluating programs during rightsizing.
The board scheduled a public community forum on Oct. 22 at Santa Clara High School to engage the public in the rightsizing conversation and said it will schedule additional staff engagement opportunities. Trustees and union leaders emphasized the need for clear, repeated communication as the process proceeds.
