Polk County extends burn ban in unincorporated areas for 30 days amid drought concerns

Polk County Commissioners Court received a drought status update and approved an extension of the burn ban for the county’s unincorporated areas on Oct. 14.
Court staff said the burn ban was originally issued Tuesday, Oct. 7, and that the Texas Forest Service recommended extending the order. The court voted to extend the ban for an additional 30 days and directed county staff and the fire marshal to remain in communication about conditions and further action.
Court members discussed forming a rating committee to work on drought response; the court appointed Judge Robertson to represent the court on that committee along with Jessica (Grants and Contracts), Sotto Santi for law enforcement and Courtney from emergency management. Staff said the committee will coordinate cross‑departmental response and consider possible extensions or lifting of the ban as conditions change.
The extension was approved by voice vote and recorded in the minutes as "motion carries."
