The Vinita City Council approved hiring volunteer firefighter Beau Bennett as a probationary firefighter during its meeting, following a recommendation from the fire chief.
Fire Chief Caden Huxtable recommended hiring Bennett on a probationary basis and said the department would evaluate his performance over a year before considering a full-time offer. "As we discussed, my recommendation is to hire Beau Bennett on as a probationary firefighter, and see how he performs and give him his years worth of probation if he lives up to that," Huxtable said.
Councilmember Young moved to approve the recommendation; Councilmember Tyler seconded. The chair called for a voice vote. Councilmembers responded, "Aye," and the chair said, "Hearing none, Mister Bennett is hired as a probationary firefighter." The meeting record shows no roll-call vote was taken.
The hire was taken as Item 15 on the agenda; the council earlier returned from executive session and stated that no motions or votes were taken while in executive session. No additional conditions or amendments to the probation were recorded in the meeting transcript.
