Duvall Cultural Commission readies call for artists for Big Rock night‑sky mural and stairs

The Duvall Cultural Commission discussed plans to release a call for artists this week for two public‑art projects: a ‘night sky’ mural on the Big Rock shack and artwork for a prominent set of stairs in town.

Commission members and staff said they have a draft press release ready and have located additional funds that would allow artists to wrap the entire shack in the night‑sky concept. Public works requested that the design could include sports motifs; staff said that suggestion would be provided as optional guidance to applicants. The commission plans to run the selection and refinement process over the winter with the goal of starting installation in the summer, but members cautioned timing will depend on weather and said they need roughly a three‑week dry spell for exterior painting.

Commissioners also discussed consolidating ribbon cuttings into a single arts celebration around the end of the commission’s biennial art plan, rather than separate ceremonies for each new work. Staff said the consolidated event would showcase multiple artists and include music and other programming.

Commissioners said they will advertise both project opportunities this week and begin the selection process over the winter, aiming to begin on‑site work in June to August if weather cooperates.
