Committee grants beer-and-wine license to batting-cage operator with limits to separate youth areas

The Public Works and Protection Committee on Oct. 7 approved a request by Boomerang Stadium Holding LLC (d/b/a Rockers) for a Class B beer and Class C wine license at 2343 Holmgren Way, subject to conditions that alcohol sales be confined to identified lounge/conference-room areas and that the licensed premise be clearly outlined on a site plan.
Staff told the committee the business could qualify under the “recreational premises” exception in Wisconsin Statute 125.32(3), which allows certain recreation-focused facilities to obtain beer and wine licenses. Village staff said the applicant’s paperwork and fees had been submitted.
John Fonta, who identified himself as overseeing the Rockers facility, described plans for six full batting lanes, four shorter pitching-machine lanes, a family lounge and a conference/catering area. He said the business aims to open in November and that alcohol would not be permitted in the batting lanes; sales would be limited to the lounge and conference/catering areas. Chase Baumann introduced himself and said he would be the site’s GM; the applicant also identified a separate proposed general manager by the name Jace.
Committee members raised concerns about mixing youth activities and alcohol sales. To address that, the committee approved a motion to grant a Class B beer and Class C wine license with conditions: the licensed premise must be drawn on the site plan to include the lounge, the conference room and connecting corridor; signage must make clear that alcohol is not allowed in the batting-cage area; and the license does not include distilled spirits. The motion carried on a voice vote.
Staff asked the applicants to provide a revised site plan for the Village Board, outlining the exact interior areas where alcohol will be allowed so that the premise can be enforced and clearly administered at the Village Board review.
The committee noted the village holds a limited number of full-liquor licenses and said it was not inclined to reserve that remaining full license for a facility whose primary business is batting cages. The approved license is limited to beer and wine.
