Commissioners received an update on the county jail construction during the Oct. 7 meeting. The owner-architect-contractor team meets roughly twice a month and staff noted that rebar for the central part of the jail is on site. Project staff are working through geotechnical issues: the soil in the building area contains clay that expands and contracts, requiring the design team to determine footing depth and fill needs before pouring begins.
Commissioners were told the central portion of the jail — the area between the housing wing and proposed sheriff’s offices — is the most complex portion and, depending on soil conditions, footings may need to go deep, possibly to the frost line, before concrete work proceeds. Staff said pouring of footings could begin in the coming week if issues are resolved and encouraged commissioners to attend the periodic project meetings; a site supervisor (Mitch) can provide on-site explanations to commissioners who visit.
No formal board action was required; the update was informational and focused on technical construction sequencing and site preparation.
