Parole board grants conditional release to Johnny Lee Brooks

The Committee on Parole on Oct. 16, 2025, granted conditional parole to Johnny Lee Brooks, DOC 113465, a fourth-felony offender serving three years hard labor for aggravated assault with a firearm. The panel voted 3-0 to approve parole with conditions including completion of 100 hours of prerelease programming and living-in-balance treatment, placement in a transitional home, weekly recovery meetings and a nightly curfew.
The board’s approval follows statements from several supporters who said Brooks has participated in in-prison programs and has a reentry plan. Lee Hartman, introduced himself as “recovery pastor at King’s Temple United Pentecostal Church in Shreveport” and told the panel Brooks “has been faithful in his attendance to church. He's faithful in his tithing and offering and his giving, and he's also faithful in serving.” Hartman said Brooks would live at a transitional home Hartman operates and that staff would help Brooks secure housing and banking oversight on release.
Panel members cited Brooks’s programming and medical needs in framing the conditions. Danny Barra, who cast the lead vote, said he would grant parole provided Brooks complete the 100-hour prerelease and the in-prison Living in Balance program before release; that Brooks go to Hartman’s transitional home after release; that he attend AA/NA meetings once a week; and that he observe a curfew from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Jerry LeDoux concurred and Carolyn Stapleton, chair, also concurred, producing a unanimous board tally. Brooks told the panel he is “remorseful” and said he had “lost [his] temper” in the incident that led to his conviction.
Warden and institutional staff confirmed Brooks’s program enrollment and medical compliance. Staff told the board Brooks had completed anger-management and other programs at his prior facility and was currently enrolled in prerelease.
Brooks’s parole is conditional on the requirements announced at the hearing; the board recorded no additional special reporting requirements. The panel signed off at 9:29 a.m.
