Deming Public Schools board approves $175,675 purchase of bucket truck

The Deming Public Schools Board of Education on Oct. 20 approved a $175,675 purchase from state purchase agreement vendor Chalmers Ford for a Ford F-550 equipped with a Versa Lift bucket truck.
Superintendent Daniel Orozco told board members the district has relied on an aging utility truck that has been red-tagged and is no longer usable. “We currently have one that's real old and has been red tagged, so we can't even — we're not allowed to use it,” Orozco said, explaining the need for a replacement.
District presenter Mr. Duarte described routine uses for the vehicle, saying it would support park and parking-lot lights, Wi-Fi and radio antennas, cameras, HVAC and roof work, trees and other electrical needs, and provide faster response for repairs requiring work aloft. “This would save us from having to rent from somebody; we would have our own,” Duarte said.
Orozco and board discussion noted the district previously budgeted roughly $250,000 for a replacement. The approved price of $175,675 is about $74,325 less than that budgeted figure. Board members said the truck is already outfitted and available, reducing lead time compared with ordering a custom build.
The motion to approve the quote was made and seconded during the meeting; all members present voted to approve the purchase. The board recorded the purchase as being made through a state purchase agreement with Chalmers Ford.
The special meeting contained a single substantive action item; the board adjourned after approving the truck purchase.
